LUM (Lafayette Urban Ministry)
Overnight volunteers arrive at the shelter at 8:15 on the selected night, help register the guests, serve food, and help with other light housekeeping tasks. Volunteers take turns sleeping in the private volunteer bedroom (two sets of bunk beds; bring a pillow-- sheets and blankets are provided). Morning duties are finished at about 7:00am.
Meal preparers can either prepare the meal at home and bring it to the shelter or use the LUM kitchen to cook. LUM’s shelter guests are provided sandwiches and salads after they are admitted to the shelter beginning at 9:00pm. We make a conscious effort to make sure the food we serve is nutritious but basic. We’re grateful for your generosity and ask that you adhere to the following guidelines....
- · Prepare enough sandwiches for 30 – 35 people
- · Salads should be kept simple such as macaroni salad, coleslaw, green salad, etc.
( Salad dressing would be helpful but is not required.) - · No desserts are needed
- · Drinks are provided by LUM
Each volunteer much participate in a one-hour training session scheduled during the evening. Training is arranged by calling Joyce Fasani at LUM (423-2691).
